Adobe has released Substance 3D Painter 12.1 and expanded OpenPBR support across its Substance 3D ecosystem, with updates aimed at making texturing, material exchange and digital-twin production more consistent.
OpenPBR reaches Painter and the asset library
Substance 3D Painter 12.1 now includes initial support for OpenPBR, the open material standard designed to keep physically based materials visually consistent across applications and renderers. Adobe says all 14,000-plus materials, decals and atlases in the Substance 3D Assets library are being converted to the format.
Faster corrections during texture baking
The update introduces Skew Map Painting, which lets artists paint corrections directly onto baking artifacts rather than rebuilding the full asset. Edge Protection and Polygon Fill are included to help preserve clean boundaries and apply changes across larger mesh regions.
Auto Rebake reduces repeated work
Auto Rebake processes only the parts of a mesh affected by a change instead of rebaking the entire project. Painter 12.1 also adds a redesigned baking workspace and a Hard Surface Auto UV mode for creating orthographically aligned UV layouts for mechanical and product assets.
Updates across Designer, Sampler and Assets
Substance 3D Designer 16 adds procedural tools including Shape Splatter v2, Signed Distance Field nodes and a real-time 3D Viewer node. Substance 3D Sampler now includes reusable Material Creation Templates, while the asset library has grown to 23,516 curated items.
Digital-twin workflows
Adobe is also connecting Substance 3D tools through standards including USD and OpenPBR to support workflows that move from CAD data to editable digital twins. These pipelines are intended for product design, review, marketing and visualisation before a physical prototype is available.
Availability and scope
The features are part of the current Substance 3D product releases. Adobe has also published a production-tested OpenPBR implementation as open-source software, allowing other tools to adopt the same material model.
Practical significance
For 3D artists, the main benefit is less time spent repairing baked textures and rebuilding materials when assets move between tools. For studios, broader OpenPBR support can reduce pipeline-specific conversions and make large asset libraries easier to reuse.
