Microsoft and Mistral have expanded their strategic partnership through a multibillion-dollar agreement focused on increasing artificial intelligence infrastructure in Europe and widening enterprise access to Mistral’s models.
Microsoft will use Mistral’s European compute capacity
Under the agreement, Microsoft will use part of Mistral’s Europe-based GPU infrastructure to support AI development and the delivery of Microsoft cloud and AI services. Mistral says the expansion will draw on thousands of NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs to provide additional capacity for training, inference and large-scale deployment.
Mistral models move deeper into Microsoft’s platform
Mistral Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 are now available through Microsoft Foundry, while Medium 3.5 has also been added to Copilot Studio. This gives developers and enterprise teams access to Mistral models inside Microsoft’s existing tools for building, customising and operating AI applications.
Support for sovereign and disconnected deployments
The partnership is designed for organisations that need greater control over data, infrastructure and connectivity. Customers can run Mistral-based applications in Azure, in cloud-connected Azure Local environments, or in fully disconnected deployments for sensitive and mission-critical workloads.
Why regulated industries are central to the deal
Financial services, healthcare, manufacturing and critical infrastructure operators often face strict requirements around data residency, resilience, privacy and operational control. Microsoft and Mistral are positioning the expanded platform as a way to use frontier AI while keeping deployment choices aligned with those requirements.
A broader commercial partnership
The companies are also preparing a joint go-to-market strategy, including funded proof-of-concept projects, Azure credits and customer workshops. Reuters reported that the agreement does not include a new equity investment by Microsoft in Mistral.
Practical significance
The deal gives Mistral access to Microsoft’s global enterprise distribution while giving Microsoft more European compute capacity and a stronger sovereign AI offering. It also shows that competition in AI is increasingly shaped by infrastructure, deployment control and access to regulated customers, not only by model performance.
Microsoft announced the expanded partnership in an official company statement .
